Buying Local is Buying Smart

Shopping locally (Mary Kramer: "Good things happen when we buy local," Oct. 6) is not just smart and the right thing to do, it's easy and can help add to the renewed sense of pride in our past and optimism for our future that's beginning to take hold across our city and region.

Detroit's past is filled with countless stories of great success and overcoming challenge, and our history tells us we always come together with hopes of a brighter tomorrow.

When shopping locally, also remember our region's outstanding nonprofit museums, performance venues, galleries and zoos--many of which operate excellent on-site and online stores. We too, need your support.

At the Detroit Historical Museum, we are pleased to feature locally made products from some the the city's iconic brands, such as Faygo, Sanders, Better Made and Germack, as well as a selection of our own recently created uniquely Detroit items, including the new 2009 Days of Detroit calendar and one of the area's largest selection of metro Detroit-themed books, prints and posters.

I applaud Mary Kramer's decision to buy locally. Let's all make the effort and positively impact both our local economy and our state of mind.

Robert Bury, Executive Director & CEO, Detroit Historical Society, Detroit
